Mundra Port in Kutch, Gujarat is India's largest private port — handling roughly 155 million tonnes of cargo annually, more than JNPT (Nhava Sheva) and Chennai combined. For any importer or exporter operating north or west of Delhi, Mundra is quietly the most cost-efficient port in the country. This guide explains why, and how to actually save 30% on inland movement by choosing Mundra intelligently.
Why Mundra usually beats Nhava Sheva for northern importers
The historical default has been JNPT / Nhava Sheva near Mumbai — because Mumbai is the "financial gateway". But for consignees in Delhi NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and western UP, Mundra is closer by road (1,180 km to Delhi vs. 1,420 km via Mumbai) and cheaper on:
- Terminal handling charges (THC): ₹8,500-11,000 per TEU at Mundra vs. ₹11,500-14,000 at JNPT.
- Container-freight-station (CFS) storage: 3 free days at Mundra vs. 2 at Nhava Sheva.
- Congestion: Mundra's average dwell time is ~2.4 days; JNPT peaks above 4 during festive demand.
- Inland haulage to Delhi: ₹6-8/kg from Mundra vs. ₹7-10/kg from Nhava Sheva.
The five ways to move cargo out of Mundra
1. Direct road (FTL container haulage)
The transporter pulls your 20-ft or 40-ft container straight to your warehouse. Delivery in 2-3 days to Delhi, 1-2 days to Jaipur or Ahmedabad. Our published lane rate: Mundra → Delhi at ₹8/kg.
2. De-stuff at a Mundra CFS, then road
You destuff the container at a Container Freight Station near the port, palletise the cargo, and move it by open-body truck. Cheaper for consignments below 15 tonnes, and no need to send an empty container back.
3. Rail (concor / mundra→ICD Tughlakabad)
Concor and DP World run daily rail rakes Mundra → ICD Tughlakabad (Delhi) and Mundra → Ludhiana. Rail is 20-25% cheaper for 25+ tonne consignments, transit 4-5 days. Best if your buyer isn't in a hurry.
4. Coastal shipping
Mundra → Chennai or Cochin via coastal vessel — only makes sense for very heavy or bulk cargo (>500 tonnes). Not relevant for most MSMEs.
5. Multi-modal via ICD Kandla
De-stuff at ICD Kandla (55 km from Mundra), then rail. Cheaper for bulk agri and mineral cargo.
The three mistakes that cost importers lakhs
Mistake 1 — Choosing your port after your supplier ships
By then it's too late to switch. Decide before the shipping instruction goes to the exporter. A Delhi importer moving to Mundra from Nhava Sheva saves ₹2,500-4,000 per TEU on freight alone, plus 24-48 hours of transit.
Mistake 2 — Not booking the empty return
If you pull a container to your warehouse for destuffing and don't book its return to the port within the free-day window, you pay ~₹1,800-2,400 per day in detention. Always book the empty-return leg at the same time as the pickup.
Mistake 3 — Ignoring the "Direct Port Delivery (DPD)" scheme
DPD-approved importers get their containers cleared and released directly at the port, skipping the CFS step. Saves 24-48 hours and ₹4,000-7,000 per TEU. Any importer doing more than 25 TEUs per year should apply through their Customs House Agent.
